With billions of users worldwide, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger are constant targets for cybercriminals. In response to rising threats, Meta is introducing a series of new security measures to better protect users from scams and online fraud.

How Meta Platforms Are TargetedStaying Ahead of Online Scams

In 2025 alone, Meta removed over 159 million advertisements identified as scams, but the company emphasizes that this is only part of an ongoing battle. On March 11, Meta announced a rollout of enhanced anti scam tools across its platforms, including device linking alerts on WhatsApp and warnings for suspicious friend requests on Facebook.

How Meta Platforms Are Targeted

Meta acknowledges that online attackers are constantly developing new strategies to exploit users. WhatsApp, for example, has been targeted by campaigns designed to compromise accounts through the “linked devices” feature. Cybercriminals send malicious invitations to join chat groups, attempting to trick users into linking their accounts to unauthorized devices.

The new WhatsApp alerts aim to detect suspicious linking attempts. Users will receive notifications showing the origin of the request and a warning if it appears potentially harmful. Meta also advises caution with tactics such as sharing phone numbers or entering device linking codes, which scammers may use to gain account access.

On Facebook, attackers are increasingly using phishing methods, including sophisticated browser in the browser attacks, to steal login credentials. Meta’s latest security update addresses another risk: fraudulent friend requests. Users will now see warnings when a request comes from an account showing unusual activity, such as a few mutual friends or a location mismatch. These alerts help users make informed choices about accepting, blocking, or rejecting requests.

Messenger is also receiving upgraded protections. The platform’s expanded scam detection tools allow users to submit recent chat messages for AI review if they suspect a conversation may involve scams, such as fake job offers or suspicious investment opportunities. Meta is gradually extending this feature to more countries, providing users with actionable guidance on blocking, reporting, and avoiding fraudulent accounts.

Staying Ahead of Online Scams

Meta’s latest updates demonstrate a proactive approach to combating scams across its platforms. By combining AI detection with real time alerts and user education, the company aims to reduce the risk of fraud while keeping users informed. As cyber threats continue to evolve, these measures provide an extra layer of security for millions of people who rely on Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger every day.

For users, remaining cautious and paying attention to these alerts is essential. Even with advanced tools in place, awareness of common scam tactics remains the most effective defense. Meta’s continuous improvements show a commitment to making its platforms safer, helping users navigate the digital world with more confidence.
